How Long is the Metre? Metrology in Croatia - from Laboratories to Everyday Life

EUROLAB is delighted to support the event "How Long is the Metre? Metrology in Croatia - from Laboratories to Everyday Life" hosted by the Technical Museum Nikola Tesla / Croatian Metrology Society taking place in Zagreb, Croatia from 27 November-30 March 2026. The event marks the 150th anniversary of the International Metre Convention to celebrate metrology. The exhibition presents the development and role of measurement in a popular-scientific way - from the first historical measures to modern laboratories, and their importance for science, industry and everyday life.

The exhibition presents various aspects of metrology through a series of informative panels – from the Convention on the Metre as the foundation of the universal language of measurement and the development of the SI system, to a panel dedicated to Nikola Tesla, after whom the unit of measurement of magnetic induction is named. Visitors will learn how measurements contribute to food safety, air traffic, forensics and cultural heritage, and how they help monitor climate change. The exhibition concludes with a look into the future of metrology, in which digitalization, artificial intelligence and new technologies are changing the way we measure, exchange and understand data. Among the physical exhibits, visitors will be able to see several important objects from Croatian metrology history, such as the first Croatian roughness standards, the triple point water standard, and old weights from the Croatian National Metrology Laboratory. These unique objects testify to the tradition and development of metrology in Croatia. The exhibition also includes additional interactive content - among them a sound installation that shows what inaccuracy and measurement uncertainty "sound like", and several educational elements that bring the world of measurement closer in a fun way.

The event is free of charge.
