Measurement & Calibration

WHAT IS MEASUREMENT?

Measurement is the process of experimentally obtaining one or more quantity values that can reasonably be attributed to a quantity

NOTE 1: Measurement does not apply to nominal properties.

NOTE 2: Measurement implies comparison of quantities and includes counting of entities.

NOTE 3: Measurement presupposes a description of the quantity commensurate with the intended use of a measurement result, a measurement procedure, and a calibrated measuring system operating according to the specified measurement procedure, including the measurement conditions.

WHAT IS CALIBRATION?

Definition by the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM): "Operation that, under specified conditions, in a first step, establishes a relation between the quantity values with measurement uncertainties provided by measurement standards and corresponding indications with associated measurement uncertainties (of the calibrated instrument or secondary standard) and, in a second step, uses this information to establish a relation for obtaining a measurement result from an indication.”  JCGM 200:2008 International vocabulary of metrology — Basic and general concepts and associated terms (VIM).
